GENESIS BE is “tired of people not treating each other right.” her new single ‘Precious Beyond Measure’ reminds us that women and men are infinitely valuable. this song reminds me of Eve’s ‘Love is Blind’ except that it touches on women, men, and children being abused in some form. i think more and more ‘younger’ artist like G.Be should continue on this path of reflective music. it’s definitely a switch up. folks want to get popular off of bragging about shit they don’t have rather than the things that are real and things that continue to paralyze our image and well-being. powerful, uplifting. listen to the song below and download it for free here: http://www.genesisbe.bandcamp.com/

sup, comrades? check out Matt Sesoo’s SpaceMix over Drake/Timbaland “Say Something” track. Sesoo is dropping a mix-tape some time this year and i will keep you posted on that. in the meantime, check out his bio and the mix below:
SpaceMan Music flagship artist Matt Sesoo is a Washington DC based
rapper/singer/song writer. After some time co-writing with
RnB/Alternative/Pop and hiphop artists, Matt Sesoo decided to commence work
on his debut mixtape “The Endless Cool” which is expected to drop before
summer 2010. A versatile artist with a penchant for experimentation, his
early influences growing up in Abuja, Nigeria include Fela Kuti, Bob Marley,
Michael Jackson and Tupac Shakur.
Matt’s music is influenced by his experience of life and his perceptions of
other people’s experiences. A very politically concious mind, he is never
one to shy away from controversial material. Industry insiders bill Matt
Sesoo to be a force to reckon with soon; his ability to weave seamlessly
through different spheres of sound makes him quite unique. To quote him; “it
doesn’t have to explicitly ask you to dance before you dance, good music
can’t be denied.”

Two years after watching and listening to her music on YouTube, I finally got to see Mishal live! Already running late (no thanks to the M train) I ended up in the wrong show room -The Living Room to be exact. Shortly, I found her upstairs in Googies Lounge covering Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” in acoustic. The vibe was smooth and mellow. While Mishal closed-out with the song “Heart on My Sleeve”, I worked hard not to let her lyrics stir up emotions of failed romances (I’m sensitive lol). Being that I was tardy, I felt a bit tight at the fact that I may have missed her perform a favorite of mine: “Make-Up Sex.” But, I didn’t miss a thing because she didn’t sing it all! No worries , the songstress reassured me that she’ll perform the song with a live band during her show on March 24th @ the Delancey Lounge here in NYC. Click here to visit MISHAL on youtube and to get more info on performances and where to buy her songs. Peep the Q&A below:
1. Mishal, your voice is sooo beautiful. You truly are a songbird and I’m always curious to know how one comes to discover that they are a songbird. So, how old were you/where were you when you realized that you had this voice?
I was 12. I was in my bedroom singing MJ’s “Will You Be There” at the top of my lungs and my mom walked in with her mouth open. She was a bit surprised because I was the dancer in the family, my sister was known for her singing.
2. Is singing your full-time job?
Well, I don’t like to call what I do a job, but yes. I haven’t had a 9-5 in 6 years.
3. Ever had an odd job?
No, not that I can think of. I had my own theater company (Bookshelves & Stereos Inc.). I used to coach, direct and write plays but I plan on going back to that in a few years. I worked at elementary school’s teaching drama. I was a vocal coach for a few years…but before then I DID work at a coffee shop..lol..but that’s not odd.
4. If you didn’t sing, what would you be doing?
Hands down, I’d go back to school to get my Masters and Ph.d to become a professor of theater and voice.
5. I just listened to Saturday Morning and wow! Who’s that about? LOL ok, well, what inspired that song?
I’m lucky to have important people in my life that support and encourage me no matter what. I write songs about it
6. I remember you telling me that you signed to an independent label because you have the freedom to call most of your own shots more or less (or just eliminate all the politics, like needing permission to be featured on my blog). Did you always want to go the independent route or was there something that just turned you off from pursuing a major label?
I never planned to sign with anyone. My goal was just to stay true to myself, my music and whoever wanted to support what I did and come along for the ride, were welcome to. Signing with Ill Friction was a perfect fit for me. I can still sign with a major if I choose to but they’d have to come to me. I’ve been at this for 8 years, I’m 28 and don’t have time to be anyone’s puppet. I don’t think major labels are bad. I think it’s the artist’s responsibility to do their research. Do things for themselves on their own, that’s the only way to discover what YOU want. All the info is out there, I did it, anyone could do it. I just think most people are lazy and want everyone else to do the work for them. In those cases, those type of artists do it for fame NOT love. ALL artists should know their craft AND the business. Period.
7. Some artists have this dream like performing at MSG or winning 5 Grammy’s in one night. What is your musical goal?
Hmmm…I know it may sound strange, but I feel like I’ve already reached my ultimate goal. I have been recognized and acknowledged as an artist WITHOUT boundaries by my peers and supporters. I’m excited to share my art with the rest of the world, so they too can know the power of NEVER judging a book by it’s cover…
